Time to light a fire under myself

Yesterday brought some double-edged-sword kind of news: one of my best friends, Humad, got a job offer in Washinton D.C. An awesome offer which he accepted. Although sad at the thought of him moving away, I am extremely happy for him, as the job represents an excellent step-forward in his career. It also makes me feel good that he is getting a very nice programming job considering that I taught him most of what he knows about programming . So, in summary, sad to have him leaving but very, very happy that he is moving on to bigger and better things.

The job offer was actually a little over a week in coming, so I have known of this possibility for a while now. Thinking about it has, of course, gotten me thinking more and more about my career. I am currently working as a programmer at a manufacturing company. Well, honestly, I am more of a re-programmer at this point, modifying existing systems a helluva lot more than I am writing new code. I have also recently started my own company and it is to that my thoughts have been turning more often.

Earlier this year I started doing some contract work for a couple of companies and I decided to start a company for the tax benefits – I pay no income tax on the money I make contracting so, come February, the goverment is going to want a goodly chunk of what I have made. Having a home-based business, however, lets me write off my expenses and a percentage of my household bills. This should allow me to not take it up the ass as severely come tax time.

Anyway, back to the point. I have begun to see the possibility of using my company as more than a tax saving operation. I think I am going to focus my efforts into building a successful business with the goal of one day working for myself – as a programmer, not a re-programmer. Humad’s success has made me realise that this is not going to happen on its own, and it is about time that I get my shit together and start moving forward myself!

On a completely unrelated note: I finally found a decent way to convert PAL DVDs to NTSC. Combining that with the program I found to convert DivX/XviDs to DVD format and I am sitting pretty. Once I have a real site up and running (soon, assuming the fire takes), I’ll put together a tutorial to cover it all. If anyone needs to know this information not now, but right now, let me know with a comment and I’ll post it.
