tales from edmonton

So, here we are in Edmonton. We have free high-speed Internet here in the hotel room, which is very nice. It would be nicer if they had wireless access but they don’t so we had to hit BestBuy and grab some Cat-5. The West Edmonton Mall is insane right now, there is some big-assed Rodeo in town so the place is packed with Cowboys (one thing I cannot understand is why all of these stick-skinny cowboys all have really fat girlfriends/wives. what’s up with that?). Luckily Lindsay and I booked our hotel back in October. Lindsay’s mom wasn’t quite so forward-thinking and they ended up staying in a place that is not quite the nicest.

In other news, I am dealing with the nastier side of running a business – deadbeat clients. I have one client who is going to be two weeks late in paying me for the October work I did for him. Of course, it is everyone’s fault but his own – the lawyer, his partner, the bank, even me. He is a total fool. I think this month is the last month that I will do any work for him – it just isn’t worth the trouble anymore. This month I will do a tonne of work and ensure to include the 15~~ late payment charge for October’s invoice – get a nice fat payout and then tell him to find someone else to do his monkey work. That should also free up my time to work on the products I want to develop…

Speaking of which, I had a really fruitful dream last night. In the dream I was presenting my software product to a client and I highlighted a few features that I hadn’t thought of yet – features that I think I will include in it when I get around to making it. I don’t plan on doing contract work forever, I want to develop a product line and start selling *that*. I can then do contract work / consulting to support that system and develop more products.

Yeah, that fire still needs a little stoking. :s
