baby steps and slacking

So, I get myself a blog and promptly start to neglect it. Not that anyone would notice – the whopping 12 hits on the counter shows that my small ramblings are not wowing the masses. Oh well, no big surprise there, it isn’t like I’m doing this to become famous.

In other news, I have actually made some progress on some of my projects. I have gotten both of my DNS servers up and running and serving up the address for all three of my domains. I have even gotten something up on the domains. There is supposed to be a "Coming Soon…" page on two of them and my test install of Joomla on the other but, alas, my Apache configuration is only about half complete and Joomla dominates all three. So far, it seems like a neat little CMS. My one complaint is the nasty-assed default theme. Talk about an overabundance of self-promotion. You can check it out at http://www.ifisgeek.com. I removed a large portion of the Joomla-promo stuff, but there is still a lot there to behold.

On other fronts, I am finally making some headway with my business. I have a business bank account setup and running and I am getting ready to start on my big project. I was thinking of making this in Ruby on Rails (which seems like a pretty sweet deal for making web applications). One of my friends suggested that I make the thing in Java. I haven’t used Java since I finished University – where they assured us that it was the language and that we’d be using it all the time in "the real world". Anyway, Java does carry a lot of brand-recognition with companies – especially American companies. I am guessing that if I am going to develop something in a non-Microsoft language, it might just be the one to use. I installed the Acrobat Reader on my Palm (a great idea, btw) and I am all about learning the JSP now. Maybe someday I’ll port the thing to ASP.NET to garner greater appeal in the States but not now.

I am going to stop working for my annoying client. He took way too long to pay me for October’s work and in the end paid me in cash. What kind of business pays consultants in cash? A business run by a monkey, that’s what kind. Anyway, I am tired of his lies (nothing is ever his fault – even when it is) and the stress of having to chase after the money that is owed to me. Besides, the project I am about to begin is going to be in direct competition with him so this will avoid any confilicts of interest.

Things are moving steadily forward with our aquisition of Humad’s VW. He is maxin’ and relaxin’ in DC and we just need to get my Nissan out of the way. Luckily, the Controller where I work has a brother who owns a used car dealership and he gave me some good advice on getting rid of the thing. Yay!

So, there you have it. A full update. I will try to be more dilligent on adding to this thing – at least until I get Joomla up and running and pretty enough that I can transfer this all over there. Or maybe I’ll keep this as-is and have other stuff there. Who knows? Only time will tell.
