Well, I went and did it. I got myself an actual webhost! This site is still very much a work in progress but the site that will be seen by anyone surfing in from the Internet will no longer be served up from my basement. I’ll still be doing my development work on the old servers but anything “in production” will be hosted in an honest-to-goodness datacentre!
The hosting company I chose is DreamHost. It is amazing what they offer. I signed up for their lowest tier shared hosting plan. For almost the exact same price as the for-some-unknown-reason popular Saskatoon hosting company that actually sucks shit, the plan features are out of this world. For example, the shitty hosting company offers a total of 5GB of monthly traffic on the plan of the same price, where as DreamHost offers a full Terabyte! In fact, the bandwidth you get increases by 8GB for every week you are on the plan – the weekly increase is more than the total monthly available at Blacksun! Oops, did I name a name? My bad. Blacksun offers 500MB of diskspace…compared to the 20GB I get with DreamHost…20GB that increases by 160MB every week. What else is great about DreamHost? Everything! Especially the fact that I can create a discount code, pop it on my site here and save anyone who happens by a bunch of money on the already cheap hosting! Amazing! Check back here and I’ll have the code set up as soon as I can!
Anyway, I’ll keep on trucking with the changes, enhancements and updates. I actually feel some momentum behind me now
