A decent end to the Oilers’ season
June 19th, 2006
So the Oilers didn’t manage to win the Stanley Cup in game 7 tonight. Disappointing, yes. Devastating? Not so much. I am not typically a big hockey fan and neither is my wife. Nevertheless, we both got into these playoffs starting with the Edmonton-Anaheim series. I cannot remember the last time that I enjoyed non-Olympic hockey this much. Whether it is the result of the rule changes introduced this season or the excitement generated by the Oilers defying expectations to come in the 8th seed and make it to the finals, I do not know. All I know is that we have both really enjoyed these games.
The fact that the Oilers didn’t win the big prize doesn’t diminish the enjoyment we have gained from watching their progress. The amazing level of play, perhaps highlighted most by the battle between the two young goalies in the final games, the games showcased everything that is good and exciting about NHL Hockey. I am not sure if it is enough to make either of us regular-season fans, but it has certainly given us a new-found appreciation for the game.
