Vista’s Launch Must Be Filling Google’s Coffers
January 31st, 2007
So Microsoft Vista has finally launched. Some people doubted it would ever launch but most of us knew that, like death and taxes, Microsoft’s next paradigm is all but inevitable. Despite all of the wishful thinking on behalf of critics, Vista will be a success for Microsoft – if you doubt this and want some reasoning behind this opinion, check out what Bob Cringely has to say on the subject in his article It takes A Monopoly.
Regardless of what the launch means for the Redmond boys, it certainly means a great deal of revenue for Google. Today, as I have been browsing the web, I have noticed the absolute ubiquity of Microsoft “The ‘Wow’ Starts Now” adverts in Google Adsense spaces. Many sites that have some relation to technology have that as the only ad showing up on their front pages. I have yet to see another entry in the ad spot at the top of my blog and sites such as Digg and Techdirt bear it as well.

One can only imagine the staggering amount of money Microsoft must have shelled out to make this ad appear so prominently on so many sites. Whether they outbid everyone for the keywords they were targeting or whether they brokered a deal directly with Google, the bottom line to Google has got to be impressive. Of course, if they simply outbid everyone – and if anyone has the budget to do so, it is Microsoft – then well, that’s the way it is. If, on the other hand, they arranged something with Google directly, I imagine that there have got to be a few advertisers out there who are now questioning the search giant’s “Don’t Be Evil” mantra. Afterall, can a friend be in bed with an enemy and remain a friend?
Either way, it’s good that someone aside from hardware vendors is making money on Vista.
