A Problem With Foam

It has long been my contention that if there is a bright center to the universe, it is Saskatoon, not Tatooine that is the furthest location from it. Common examples can be found everywhere from music to fashion. Songs that are popular now in Saskatoon were topping the charts on Virgin Radio as much as a year ago. The other day Lindsay and I went out for lunch and just how far out of the loop this city is was presented front and center.

Ever since my trip to New Orleans and the time I spend with the DriveWorks boys, I have been addicted to Guinness. I must confess that I had never had much of a taste for the stuff before then, but now it is all I want to drink. Foruntately for my addiction, more and more places in Saskatoon have begun to offer Guinness, sometimes even on tap. Kelsey’s is one such place and that is where Lindsay and I went for lunch last weekend.

Lindsay, being pregnant, ordered herself a virgin caesar and I ordered a pint of Guinness. A few minutes later the waitress returned to our table with the caesar and told me that my beer would be a few more minutes as they were having a problem with foam. I jokingly said to Lindsay that they probably didn’t know that Guinness is supposed to have a lot of head when first poured and retains a decent cap when it is ready to drink. I thought I was joking. Lindsay thought I was joking. Then we heard the waitress up at the bar say, “So, it’s supposed to be like this?”. It got a little less funny and a little more sad. The waitress then delivered my drink and almost ran away from the table. I guess she was afraid I would be angry and the amount of foam.

I’ll say this much for Saskatoon, it is trying to be more sophisticated. Maybe someday it will actually succeed.

The best Guiness in town is in Boffins in Innovation Place… Beily’s has a chocolate cherry stout that’s pretty nice too…
